Cabinet has recently approved a set of Land Transport regulatory amendments that introduce updated fees and penalties aimed at improving road safety and compliance.
These changes include new penalties for failure to stop and weigh, revised fines for illegal parking, and increased speeding fines under amendments to the Land Transport (Fees and Penalties) Regulations 2000, strengthening Fiji’s transport regulatory framework.
The Ministry of Transport says the penalty for failure to stop and weigh is now $300 for a first offence, $600 for a second offence and $900 for any subsequent offence.
The new fine for illegal parking or stopping has increased from $20 to $100.
The fine for exceeding the speed limit by less than 15km/hr has increased from $25 to $50, exceeding the speed limit by 15km/h to 29km/h has increased from $40 to $75 and exceeding the speed limit by 30km/h or more has increased from $60 to $100.
The Ministry says these fines and penalties will come into effect from the date of gazetting.
Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau says that with 72 road deaths recorded as of 28th November 2025, compared to 56 during the same period last year, speeding has been identified as the leading cause, and tougher penalties are necessary.
Ro Filipe says the stricter penalties are intended to deter high-risk behaviour and improve overall road safety, as the persistent issuance of TINs shows that current penalties are not strong enough.
He says the reforms support national priorities on transport safety and governance while reinforcing the Government’s commitment to safer roads, fairer permit processes, and the protection of public infrastructure.
