Businessman and former SODELPA supporter Varinava Tiko who served time in prison for holding people hostage at Korovou Town during the 2000 coup has been appointed as the Acting Party Leader of New Generation Party.

Speaking to fiijivillage after his appointment in Lautoka today, Tiko says this is the time for those who can lead with principles and honesty.

Tiko adds he has a passion for the Vanua and the indigenous people and at the same time also acknowledge the presence of different ethnic groups in Fiji.

He adds according to their Constitution, the candidate that wins the most votes for the party after the election will become the party leader.

When asked by fijivillage about his involvement in the 2000 coup, Tiko says although he is related to 2000 coup leader George Speight, he never took part in the planning and execution of the coup.

He adds his involvement came two months after the 2000 coup when George Speight and the then Army Commander Voreqe Bainimarama could not resolve the Muanikau Accord.

Tiko further says going back and digging up bones of the past has its psychological impact because people were hurt but he had the right motives and did not send people to go and hurt others.

He adds he served one year in prison.

Tiko adds he cannot be compared to the current Prime Minister and the People’s Alliance Leader because he stood up and faced the court judgment and served his time.

Tiko was appointed at the New Generation Party inaugural founders meeting today.

The party founders are accountant Frederick Kataiwai, President Wane Moli Veiba, Vice President Babitu Ledua, retired teacher Simione Leitabu, Ranjina Kaur and former Senior Corrections Officer Ratu Isireli Dausiga.
