This Christmas carries a bittersweet feeling for Tia Tulewa, as her elder son, now working in Suva, will not be with the family but despite his absence, she remains committed to celebrating the true essence of the season of family, faith and forgiveness.

In an interview with fijivillage News, Tulewa from Koroipita, Lautoka says there are no new traditions for her family this year.

She says their Christmas celebrations begin with an early church service followed by having a bowl of kava before the proceedings, exchanging gifts and concluding with a meal.

The 43-year-old says this year, however, there is a bittersweet note as her elder son will not be spending Christmas with the family as he has been transferred to Suva for work.

She says additionally, two family members who are facing personal challenges will join the celebration, making it both a time of joy and togetherness.

She adds that although the rising costs of Christmas are a concern, it has not affected their plans and they will celebrate it as their biggest Sunday so that the meaning of the season remains unchanged.

Tulewa says in the past, she attended many family occasions, but this year, she is focusing on spending quality time with her immediate family.

She urges everyone to embrace the spirit of giving and taking.

She says Christmas is not just about gifts, but about the people you share it with.
