After almost three decades together, Senegalese-American singer, songwriter, and producer Akon and his wife Tomeka Thiam are calling it quits.

Court documents reveal that Tomeka filed for divorce just four days before what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary.

In her filing, Tomeka listed irreconcilable differences as the reason for the breakup.

She is requesting joint legal custody but wants physical custody of their child.

Tomeka is also seeking spousal support and has made it clear that she does not want Akon to be eligible for any support from her.

The couple’s long marriage appeared strong from the outside, but court papers show things have been unraveling behind the scenes.

With 28 years of history, children, and a shared life together, the divorce marks a major shift for the family.

So far, Akon has not spoken publicly about the filing.

Meanwhile, Senegal has officially cancelled the ambitious $6 billion "Akon City" project, initiated by Akon.

The development, envisioned as a futuristic city powered by renewable energy and cryptocurrency, has been scrapped due to significant delays, funding issues, and lack of tangible progress.

As of mid-2025, the site, approximately 80 kilometers from Dakar, remains largely undeveloped, with only a single unfinished reception building constructed.
