Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar has assured the Nadonumai fire victims that her Ministry staff and other relevant stakeholders will assist the families under their Fire Relief Assistance program to cater for their immediate basic needs.

Akbar today visited the families in Nadonumai who had lost their homes in a fire last week.

The fire, which broke out at around 5.10pm last Wednesday, also claimed the life of a 6 month old boy.

Akbar says they will also look into other government assistance and ways to help their children go back to school.

She says she can assure Timoci Gonerogo’s family that the Government is here for them and has assistance for them at this terrible time.

Akbar also thanked Gonerogo’s relative in Nadonumai and her employee for providing the temporary shelter for them and giving the assistance during this difficult time.

She encourages families, friends and the potential donors to come forward and provide support in whichever way they can to help these families.

42 year old Timoci Gonerogo says he can't believe that his family has lost everything in the fire and they really miss Baby Uraia.

He thanked his neighbours and relatives for their support during this time of need.

Gonerogo says the visit by Minister Akbar today brings relief to him and his family as they are getting immediate basic food items and will be provided by other assistance given by the government.

He is glad that the Minister came all the way to visit them, it gives them assurance that they will be assisted by the government to rebuild their lives.

Gonerogo says he lives with his 74 year old father and his cousin’s family in the house.

The families will discuss and seek advice from the Department of Social Welfare and other relevant stakeholders on how they can be further assisted.

Five adults and five children are affected by this fire.
