All Blacks halfback Aaron Smith has signed a new contract with New Zealand Rugby that will keep him in the country until 2023.

The 32-year-old played his 151st game for the Highlanders last weekend where they lost 26-13 to the Crusaders.

With 97 tests, he is the most capped All Black halfback of all time.

Smith says he is very keen to see the Highlanders do well, as they have a good environment and some great, young players.

Highlanders coach Tony Brown says Smith is a huge part of this team and his leadership, commitment, drive and skill are all key aspects of his contribution to the Highlanders.

Brown says Smith continues to be world class and works extremely hard to maintain it and that hard work and professionalism is a fantastic example to the rest of the team, particularly the young fellows coming into the team.

All Blacks head coach Ian Foster says the recommitment of Smith was huge news and his re-signing could not be underestimated.

He says Smith is so instrumental in the way they play the game and is such a vital cog for them, both on and off the field, so this is fantastic news.

The Highlanders will take on the Chiefs at 6.05pm Friday while the Crusaders face the Hurricanes at 5.35pm on Sunday.
