62 people were killed onboard a passenger plane that crashed on the outskirts of São Paulo, Brazil yesterday.

The Voepass Linhas Aéreas flight, an ATR 72-500, plunged 17,000 feet in just one minute, though the cause is still unknown.

The plane was en route from Cascavel to Guarulhos when it lost signal before crashing near Vinhedo.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva interrupted a speech to acknowledge the tragic event and São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas has created a crisis cabinet to manage the situation.

No ground casualties were reported and an investigation into the crash has begun with the aircraft’s manufacturer assisting with the investigation.
