A 54-year-old man has died and two students aged 18 and 19 years old are receiving medical treatment after two separate accidents yesterday.

Director Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana says the 54-year-old man was allegedly hit by a vehicle driven by a 26-year-old man at the junction of Levuka Road in Savusavu after 10 last night.

SSP Divuana says the 26-year-old driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle resulting in the unfortunate accident that allegedly claimed the life of the victim from Nabalebale in Savusavu.

He says the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.

The road death toll currently stands at 16 compared to 22 for the same period last year.

In another accident, SSP Divuana says two students aged 18 and 19 years were hit by a truck driven by a 30-year-old man.

It is alleged that the suspect tried to stop his truck from colliding with another vehicle at the Laqere traffic lights, causing his vehicle to veer onto the footpath and hit the two victims.

Both victims were rushed to the Makoi Health Centre and later transferred to the CWM Hospital where they remain admitted in stable condition.
