Around 440 volunteers for the Olympic Games have quit in response to comments about women by Yoshiro Mori who is the head of the Tokyo Olympics Organising Committee.

Mori who is a former Prime Minister of Japan said women talk too much and that meetings with many female board directors would take a lot of time.

The 83-year-old later apologised for the remarks following calls for his resignation but said he did not plan to stand down.

BBC News reports that the International Olympic Committee says comments made about women by Mori were absolutely inappropriate.

The IOC says it considered the issue closed after the apology.
