More employment opportunities have been announced in the 2025/2026 National Budget as $1 million has been allocated for the recruitment of 40 new positions under Phase 2 of the Job Evaluation Exercise at the Fiji Corrections Service.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad says this initiative reflects their ongoing efforts to invest in the human resources needed to manage correctional facilities safely, fairly, and effectively. Professor Prasad says in addition to staffing, they have also increased budgetary support for two essential operational needs.
He says the first one is that they have boosted the allocation for inmate food rations, ensuring that the basic welfare of inmates is upheld in accordance with international standards.
He further says that the second essential operational need is allocating funds for the procurement of clothing and uniforms for Correction Services personnel, recognising the vital role that discipline, morale, and visibility play in maintaining the integrity of the corrections system.
The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted that $2.3 million is allocated for the upgrade of public cemeteries across the country.
He adds the funding will support the improvement of cemetery standards, including better access, drainage, and layout.
He says it will also allow for the engagement of consultants to undertake proper surveying and the design of civil works.
Professor Prasad says for too long, cemetery infrastructure has been overlooked, leading to overcrowding and unmanaged burial grounds in some areas.
He adds this investment will help ensure that cemeteries are developed and maintained in a respectful, orderly, and sustainable manner—honouring the cultural, religious, and communal significance they hold.
