A $25,000 Government-funded bridge and footpath has improved access and safety for residents of Tarukua Village on Cicia Island, Lau.
For years, villagers relied on an old corrugated iron bridge to reach the nearby school and other essential areas.
The structure was prone to damage during heavy rains, and its collapse had left families and children struggling to cross safely.
The new concrete bridge, which was completed in 2025, provides a durable and reliable route for daily travel, while also strengthening the community’s connection to schools, health facilities, and other services.
Village representative Vakanawanawa Bakaniceva says the project was a significant improvement for local life.
Assistant District Officer for Lau Province, Penina Wainiu says the village applied for the project through a formal request at a village meeting, meeting the criteria for Government assistance.
The construction was delivered under the Village and Community Bridges and Foot Crossings 1/3–2/3 Programme.
Materials were transported by boat to the island, while villagers provided the labour and technical skills to build the bridge.
In addition to the bridge, Tarukua Village received nine solar-powered footpath lights, enhancing safety in the evenings and making village walkways more secure for children and elders.
