The 18-year-old high school student who allegedly caused the death of a man in his 20s at an apartment complex in Suva earlier this month will have his bail hearing on the 23rd of July.
Rihaal Kumar appeared before Suva High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar this morning.
The Legal Aid Commission has withdrawn from the case as a private lawyer has now been engaged.
Defence counsel, Robert Bancod appeared for Kumar.
The State Counsel, Eoghn Samisoni objected to bail but confirmed they are not seeking a psychiatric evaluation.
Samisoni told the court that the two had a romantic relationship and had met for the first time when the incident occurred, during which Kumar allegedly stabbed the man once near the neck.
The State says Kumar has made admissions regarding the incident.
Justice Goundar questioned why the State was objecting to bail.
Samisoni says that Kumar poses a safety threat to the complainant.
Justice Goundar asked how Kumar could pose a risk when he is not related to the complainant and did not flee the scene.
Kumar has been charged with one count of murder.
He remains in custody.
