An 18-year-old student in Nadi died early yesterday morning after being run over by a vehicle.

Police say that the student, who was allegedly drunk, is believed to have been sleeping on the roadside when he was run over by a passing vehicle driven by a 43-year-old man.

They say he was taken to Nadi Hospital but passed away later that morning.

Fiji Police Director of Traffic Control, Senior Superintendent Mitieli Divuana, is urging young people to avoid walking along the road while under the influence of alcohol, saying it puts both themselves and other road users at risk.

Meanwhile, the driver is in police custody as investigations continue.
