The 10,000 Toes Campaign of the Seventh-day Adventist Church has reported that over the past five years, the iTaukei community has recorded the highest number of diabetes cases, mostly among people aged 20 to 40.
Coordinator Jona Nawaqavou highlighted this to fijivillage News during the 17th Quinquennial Session currently underway at the Civic Centre in Suva.
Nawaqavou says that many in this age group feel they can do anything, but eventually their health is severely affected.
He also highlighted that between 2021 and 2025, they have screened 200,000 people and reached more than 300 villages and settlements.
He is also reminding the public to be conscious of their diet, as diabetes remains one of the most common non-communicable diseases affecting people across all ethnic groups in Fiji.
Nawaqavou is urging everyone to stay healthy by choosing a plant-based diet, exercising regularly, and drinking plenty of water.
