NFA reminds prioritising safety as people prepare for Diwali celebrations

As families across Fiji prepare to celebrate Diwali, the National Fire Authority is reminding everyone to prioritise safety while decorating their homes and business premises.

Last year four homes were destroyed during Diwali long weekend which left 15 people homeless.

With Diwali just around the corner, NFA is urging the public to ensure that all exits and walkways remain clear at all times.

They say that during an emergency, every second counts and keeping pathways unobstructed could be the difference between life and death.

The NFA says people are advised to be mindful when setting up decorative lights, candles and diyas, making sure they are placed safely away from curtains, drapes and other flammable materials.

The NFA is calling on everyone to stay alert and make safety a part of their Diwali celebration plans.

In the event of a fire or emergency, the public is reminded to call 910 immediately for assistance.

Diwali will be celebrated next Tuesday.
