A group of juveniles involved in a recent stoning incident at the Baba Ragho Dass Vishnu Kuti temple in Sawani, Nausori, have expressed deep remorse, as temple leaders and the wider community consider a path toward reconciliation.
The incident took place last Tuesday night during a routine weekly prayer gathering at the temple, when, in the middle of a religious programme, the sound of stones striking the temple roof interrupted the peaceful proceedings.
Vice President of the temple, Dharman Prasad says that given the rise in similar attacks on temples across the country, fears of being deliberately targeted were immediate.
He says authorities responded quickly and launched an investigation, and within two days, five juveniles were taken into custody for questioning, accompanied by their parents.
Prasad says the temple leaders have met with the juveniles at the police station, and the juveniles have apologised for their actions and acknowledged their mistake.
He says with regards to reconciliation, the final decision rests with the temple's president and board, who are currently discussing the next steps.
He stresses that while legal processes are important, the first and most effective step is guidance from within families and communities.
Despite the incident, the temple continues its daily religious activities and invites the public to visit and worship in peace.
