People’s Alliance Party Women's President claims SGM organised without her knowledge

Balawa rejects allegations

There is drama within the People’s Alliance Party as their Women’s Wing National President says the Women's Special General Meeting is scheduled for tomorrow without her knowledge.

While speaking to fijivillage News, PAP Women’s Committee National President Titilia Saurara says the party constitution clearly states that the Women’s Alliance Committee must call the Annual Women’s Assembly immediately before the Party’s Annual General Meeting.

Saurara says there is a lack of communication.

She says the requests to the General Secretary, Sila Balawa and other party leaders remain unanswered.

Saurara stresses that the party requires a qualified General Secretary and stronger financial oversight, and they need the immediate appointment of a treasurer.

She adds that she has raised these issues with the management board, the disciplinary committee chair, and the legal committee chair.

She says if the internal measures fail, she is prepared to escalate the matter to the media and the Fijian Elections Office.

People’s Alliance Party General Secretary Sila Balawa says the decision to hold a Special General Meeting for the Women’s Wing was made by the People’s Management Committee after no Women’s Annual General Meeting was held in 2025.

Responding to concerns raised by Saurara, Balawa says under the party constitution, the Women’s Alliance Committee is administered by the women’s executives, who are accountable to the People's Management Committee.

He says the committee agreed that the Women’s SGM would be held after the start of the school term to avoid burdening mothers preparing children for school although Saurara had suggested for the meeting to be held on the 24th of January.

Balawa says divisional presidents from the Western, Northern, Central and Eastern divisions agreed on the scheduled date, and preparations are underway with women travelling from around the country to attend.

He says the Women’s Wing needs to hold its AGM prior to the party’s National AGM so the motions and issues can be submitted at the national level as this did not happen in 2025, resulting in complaints from women around the country who were not given the opportunity to raise grievances or proposals.

He says the People's Management Committee therefore directed the Secretariat to organise a Special General Meeting for the Women’s Wing in 2026, similar to the Youth Wing, which also did not hold an AGM in 2025.

He warns against making public accusations, saying the party constitution provides proper grievance channels and a committee to address such matters internally.

The Women's Wing Special General Meeting will be at the Suva Civic Centre at 9am tomorrow.
