Taxi drivers at Howell Road Taxis and Tours in Suva are feeling the strain of rising fuel prices, as increasing costs continue to impact their daily operations and household finances.

Manager and driver David Prasad says while his family is managing for now, the pressure is steadily mounting.

Prasad says like many in the industry, he is a key provider for his household.

With both he and his wife working to support their two children, he admits they are coping “slowly” as expenses continue to rise.

He says drivers have been forced to cut back on spending, focusing only on essential items such as basic food.

He says daily routines, including transporting his children to school and his wife to work, are also contributing to higher fuel usage.

Prasad explains that his vehicle requires a full tank every two days, costing between $105 and $107, which amounts to approximately $450 to $500 in fuel each week.

He adds that while some drivers have suggested increasing taxi fares to help offset costs, any such move would depend on government approval.

For now, taxi operators say they have little choice but to continue working under pressure, hoping for measures that will ease the burden.
