The five Police officers charged for their alleged involvement in an assault and extortion case against a Nasinu businessman in July.

Immunity is being offered by the State to one of the five Police officers charged for their alleged involvement in an assault and extortion case against a Nasinu businessman in July.

The 5 are Semiji Puamau, Elizabeth Sautu, Koroi Lakokilepanoni, Bernand Vukivuki and Timoci Belo.

They appeared before Nasinu Magistrate Krishn Prasad this morning.

State Counsel John Vaurasi has asked if the accused can be given individual representation as the State will be offering immunity to one of the five.

Vaurasi also asked for more time for the State’s position to ensure proper disclosures can then be served.

He also informed the court that Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, John Rabuku who is currently in Lautoka will be handling the matter.

Joji Cakau, who is representing four of the accused has asked if he can be given disclosures to see if he has any conflicts of interest with his clients.

Eroni Navuda who is representing one of the accused says he also has no objections.

Magistrate Prasad says he has also not seen any evidence regarding the conflict of interest in the representation of the accused.

The 5 are currently out on $1,000 cash bail each.

They have also provided 2 sureties each, bonded for $1000 and have been ordered to surrender their travel documents.

Stop Departure Orders have also been issued for the 5.

Police say they have all been charged with one count of assault causing actual bodily harm.

Four of the officers face an additional charge of theft and wrongful confinement while two officers face a third count of possession of property suspected of being proceeds of crime.

Their case has been adjourned to the 16th of October.
