Muana-Ira villagers feeling the wrath of climate change

Muana-Ira villagers feeling the wrath of climate change

The villagers of Muana-Ira in Rewa are currently experiencing the impacts of climate change such as soil erosion and high tides that cause flooding in the village leading to their agricultural produce being affected heavily.

While speaking to fijivillage News, the former district representative Peniasi Naimoso says back in the day, high tide only reached the village when it was a full moon, but now it is not the same.

Naimoso says the villagers have started constructing a seawall as part of their project to help in the mitigating of the climate crisis.

Muana-Ira Village Headman, Eremasi Balekaba says they cannot come out of the climate crisis but improvise with whatever resources they have to meet the needs of the villagers.

Balekaba says they are improvising with the traditional knowledge that they have and applying it to farming.
