16-year-old Melaia Sisilia Malani Maiwiriwiri

16-year-old Melaia Sisilia Malani Maiwiriwiri, who was homeschooled for most of her life, has defied all odds to graduate from Church College Fiji today.

The Somosomo, Taveuni girl defied all expectations and showed the power of perseverance as she joined the formal education system in Year 11.

Her story is a testament to resilience, inspiring young Fijians to pursue their dreams despite challenges.

In an interview with fijivillage News, Maiwiriwiri says the decision to be homeschooled was a joint one with her parents.

She says together, they felt it would offer her the chance to understand herself better and learn in a way that suited her individual needs.

The 16-year-old says despite the benefits of homeschooling, she faced challenges, particularly in socialising.

She admits that she struggled to communicate with others and found it difficult to make social connections.

When asked about her decision to join Year 11 in formal education, she says she was driven by curiosity and a desire for new opportunities.

She says she believed that by entering the formal school system, she could achieve more and gain valuable experiences.

Maiwiriwiri says the transition was not easy because adjusting to a structured environment with fixed schedules and expectations proved to be a challenge compared to the freedom she had experienced while being home-schooled.

She says she overcame these obstacles with prayer, guidance from her teachers, and the unconditional support of her parents.

Maiwiriwiri plans to continue her education and hopes to pursue a career in social work, therapy, and counselling.

She says her goal is to help others and provide support to those in need.

To young people, she encourages them to find their true passion and pursue it because doing what excites and motivates them will lead to success.
