A recent profiling exercise by the Ministry of Youth and Sports has identified 140 youths living on Suva streets, including 40 women and eight children under the age of 10.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru says their struggles highlight the urgent need for rehabilitation and support pathways.

He says he led a high-level delegation to meet with Social and Child Protection teams to develop collaborative plans for rehabilitation and diversion pathways for those identified.

Saukuru says this is an issue that requires a whole-of-society approach.

He says they are committed to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure these young people have opportunities for a better future.

He adds that the meeting initiated plans for a similar profiling exercise in the Western Division.

Minister says the working group will oversee the implementation of these initiatives.

Inspire Pacific and Kauwai Home of the Salvation Army shared insights from their recently completed rehabilitation program, which successfully supported 17 youths and their families.

They say their model serves as an example for scaling up rehabilitation efforts nationwide.

Renowned musician Seru Serevi also shared his work with street dwellers, using music as a medium for engagement and rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, Former Flying Fijian and rugby legend Seremaia Bai discussed his work with 500 children and youth through his rugby academy, offering his experiences as a framework for supporting vulnerable young people.
