The Nalawa Stage 2 Grid Extension and Rural Electrification Project extends electricity from Nasau Village to Nukuilau Village, supplying power to Ovalau Village, Nasau Primary School and the Nasau Health Centre.
Speaking at the commissioning of the project, Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau says house wiring worth about $435,000 will also be carried out for 267 households, benefiting an estimated 1,068 people.
He says while some house wiring work is still outstanding, it is expected to be completed by December.
Tuisawau says the Government fully funded the project at a cost of about $2.45 million, meaning communities are no longer required to contribute towards rural electrification projects, as they did in the past.
He says reliable electricity will improve daily life for families while also supporting better learning opportunities for students, enhancing services at the local health centre and creating opportunities for businesses to grow.
The Minister says the Government remains committed to ensuring every Fijian has access to electricity by 2030 and has already connected more than 30,000 households through its rural electrification programme.
