The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection says the change only affects the insurance scheme, which provided one-off financial assistance for funeral expenses, fire losses and accident-related claims.
Acting Permanent Secretary Selina Kuruleta says the Government has allocated about $184 million to continue supporting people through its existing social welfare programmes.
She says payments under the Family Assistance Scheme, Child Protection Allowance, Disability Allowance Scheme, Social Pension Scheme, Transport Assistance Programme and the Allowance for Rural Pregnant Mothers will continue as normal.
Kuruleta acknowledges that the end of the insurance scheme may cause concern for some families, but says the Government remains committed to supporting those most in need through its existing social protection programmes.
She adds that healthcare-related assistance will also continue through the Ministry of Health and other government agencies.
