The Fiji Fashion Week organisers are calling on the government to incorporate fashion designing as part of the education curriculum.

Managing Director of Fiji Fashion Week and founder, Ellen Whippy-Knight says Fiji’s fashion industry is behind and if we want to compete in the international scene, we should make a huge leap into fashion education.

She says fashion is important like rugby and tourism since it also has the capabilities to attract foreign dollars.

Whippy-Knight says the failure of the education system in the last 15-years to deliver a high tech industry has caused Fiji to be behind.

She adds the previous government refused to acknowledge the creative culture and arts industry which includes fashion design.

While officiating at the launch of the Fiji Fashion Week, Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro says they will be convening an education summit to review the education system in the country.

He says fashion is a sector that provides employment to those without qualification as Fijians are well-known for their art and craft work.

Fiji Fashion Week will be held on the 2nd and 3rd of next month at the Vodafone Arena.
