Former Commander Navy and current Deputy Commander RFMF, Commodore Humphrey Tawake, has retired from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces after 37 years of service, leaving behind what the Fiji Navy describes as a lasting legacy of growth, transformation and capability development.

Commodore Tawake served as Commander Navy for eight years, from 2017 to 2025, during which he led a number of major initiatives aimed at strengthening Fiji’s maritime security and operational capabilities.

Among the key achievements during his tenure were the delivery of Guardian-class patrol boats, hydrographic vessels from China and Korea, small RHIBs from the United States, small boats and the Interceptor Patrol Craft from Japan.

He also oversaw the refurbishment of Stanley Brown Base and the development of the small boats ramp at the naval base.

The Fiji Navy says Commodore Tawake’s most significant achievement was the establishment of the Vuvale Maritime Essential Services Centre, which now serves as a national hub for maritime coordination, search and rescue operations, surveillance and whole-of-government maritime security efforts.

Commander Navy Commodore Timoci Natuva thanked Commodore Tawake and his wife for their dedication, sacrifice and commitment to the Fiji Navy family over many years.

Commodore Natuva says Tawake’s leadership has left behind a strong foundation that will continue to guide the Fiji Navy into the future.

He noted that Commodore Tawake’s personal mantra, “Leave the place better than you found it,” is reflected in the many achievements and milestones realised during his leadership.

The Republic of Fiji Navy has extended its appreciation to Commodore Tawake for his service and contribution to the nation over nearly four decades.
