The biggest FIFA World Cup in history got underway in spectacular fashion as global superstar Shakira headlined a star-studded opening ceremony at Mexico City's iconic Estadio Azteca before hosts Mexico kicked off the tournament against South Africa.
Thousands of fans packed the famous stadium as Shakira took centre stage in a colourful celebration of football, music and culture ahead of the opening match.
The Colombian singer was joined by a host of international artists, including Burna Boy, J Balvin, Tyla, Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, Maná and Los Ángeles Azules, who entertained fans before the action began on the field.
The ceremony marked the official start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is being jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada.
For the first time in World Cup history, the tournament will feature 48 teams, making it the largest edition ever staged.
A total of 104 matches will be played across 39 days in the three host nations.
FIFA has also introduced another first for the tournament, with separate opening ceremonies planned in each of the three host countries.
Following the opening ceremony, hosts Mexico faced South Africa in the first match of what is expected to be a historic World Cup.
