Tragic news from Savusavu as two people have died after a yacht fire on Monday night.

Eyewitnesses from Captain’s Café located on the Savusavu waterfront said that the fire started just after 7.30pm.

They heard a loud explosion and when they ran out to see what had happened, they said that they saw huge flames from one of the yachts.

A woman from the café at the Copra Shed Marina building in Savusavu told Fijivillage that a number of people rushed to find out if anyone was on the yacht.

She said a man was rescued from the vessel and as he was being rushed to shore to be taken to hospital, she could only hear the man repeatedly saying that his wife is trapped in the yacht and he needs to go back in there.

She said the woman was trapped in the vessel and passed away as no one could go back to the yacht.

The man died at the hospital yesterday after sustaining extensive burns.

The couple were operating a screen printing business in Savusavu.

We have received information that they were originally from Canada.
