Approvals given for industrial site along Marine Drive

The Minister for Environment, Town and Country Planning, Colonel Samuela Saumatua said approvals have been given for an industrial site along Marine Drive near Nadonumai.

According to the ministry, the site opposite the former Lami Rubbish dump where mangroves have been removed will be developed into the industrial subdivision.

Fijivillage questioned why an industrial subdivision is being developed near the main road, near a residential area and opposite the old dump which is now being developed as a recreational park.

Questions have also been raised on whether proper town and country assessments have been carried out and these issues have been taken into account.

When questioned, Colonel Saumatua said the industrial site was approved before he became minister.
