A decision has been made to clear people out of the central Christchurch business district for their own safety following this morning’s 7.1 magnitute earthquake in New Zealand.
Civil Defense Minister John Carter said this is because the dangers of falling masonry are considered serious enough to warrant the evacuation of the CBD.
This report from Radio New Zealand.
Police say there have been reports of looting in the central Christchurch on Saturday and the Army is preparing to send in troops to assist officers, if required.
There are no reports of casualties as yet.
