Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says the Government must consider whether there is enough time for people to understand any new electoral laws before the next general election.
Rabuka says it would not be fair to rush voters into an election without fully understanding the amended laws.
He says if amendments are made, they are likely to be extensive and will require time.
The Prime Minister says he is unsure whether the bills related to electoral laws will be tabled in this week's Parliament sitting.
Rabuka also confirmed that the Supervisor of Elections recently briefed Cabinet on the election timetable and the country’s preparedness.
He says the briefing was a general discussion on whether Fiji is prepared to hold the election now or at a later stage.
Rabuka says, however, his duty remains to try to have the election held during the Government’s first term between the 24th of December and the 6th of February.
According to the law, the last date for the Writ of Elections to be issued is December 24th 2026, and the last date for the general elections is 6th February 2027 based on the current term of parliament.
