Students and teachers of Samabula Primary School came out in their Fiji colours today to celebrate Fiji Day.

Some were also wearing their Princess costumes and traditional outfits as we saw unity and diversity on display at the school hall.

Chief Guest, Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports Alipate Nagata sent out a message to the students that the teachings of their elders and their faith is important at their age.

Nagata says it is very important that the students make good use of their education while they are still in school and at the same time they should listen to their parents.

He says every year, a number of adolescent girls become mothers, and complications from pregnancy are the leading cause of death worldwide among girls from 15 to 19 years old.

Nagata says only last year there was a record of 104 girls becoming young mothers therefore the most effective ways to prevent teenage pregnancy are to keep girls in school and to provide them with sexual and reproductive health education and services.

He adds that children's education will empower them on skills to safely navigate the world and he prays that they will all absorb with keenness all that our education system has to offer and let it be a guiding pillar in their journey through life.
