Parts of Labasa and Savusavu now flooded

Parts of Labasa and Savusavu are now flooded.

Labasa Market area, Savilla House and the area near New World Supermarket in Labasa Town are now flooded.

This has just been confirmed by Labasa Police.

Qawa River burst its banks just after 7am today and Labasa Police are advising people living in low lying areas in Labasa to move to high ground now.

Police Director of Operations, Livai Driu says Police are already moving people living in low lying areas to higher ground.

Driu also says that flood waters are also likely to enter many areas in Labasa Town as the next high tide is at 9.30 this morning.

The high tide is expected to go up to about 2 metres.

Police are also monitoring people in Labasa Town.

Some roads in Labasa are closed this morning due to flooding caused by continuous heavy rain in the area. Roads in Vunivau, Soasoa, Qawa, Korotari and Batinikama are closed due to flooding.                                       

Some houses in Bulileka and Siberia Road are also affected by flood waters.  

There are also reports of flooding in Urata.

A resident of Vunika Settlement Fazilat Farzana says Soasoa Bridge is flooded and this has cut off access to students and people that were travelling to school and work this morning.

People living in Wainikoro, Malau and Vunika are also affected by flood waters.      

A resident in Soasoa Flats says that they had experienced non-stop heavy rain and thunderstorms from last night until this morning which resulted in flooding in nearby areas.

Korotari resident, Pradeep Lal has confirmed areas in Korotari are also flooded.

We have also received information regarding flooding in Belego in Savusavu.

A resident, Nilesh Ram has confirmed that they are experiencing heavy rain and flood waters are rising.

The Nadi Weather Office says a flood warning remains in force for Dreketilailai to the Qawa River and also Labasa Town.

Residents in Nasolo village in Bua, Vanua Levu have confirmed that water levels in the creeks in the area are rising due to the continuous rain. 

A flood alert also remains in force for low lying areas, small streams and areas adjacent to major rivers of Vanua Levu and Taveuni.

A heavy rain warning remains in force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Yasawa Group and Northern Lau Group.

A heavy rain alert remains in force for the rest of Fiji.

 

An active trough of low pressure with associated cloud and rain remains slow moving about the Northern parts of the group. Please be advised that it is expected to gradually drift South and affect the rest of the country from later today.

For Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Yasawa Group and Northern Lau Group - expect heavy rain and thunderstorms. Flash flooding is expected.

For the rest of Fiji, expect heavy rain from later today.
