Man dies after being washed away by flood waters, one still missing

Police have confirmed that a man was swept away by strong currents and another man is still missing as flood waters begin to rise and affect parts of the Western Division again.

Police Acting Chief of Operations, ACP Maretino Qiolevu has confirmed that the incident occurred in Tavua when a man who is in his 50s was swept away in the Nadelei River while crossing the flooded Tabutabu Bridge.

 

 

Three villagers were able to locate the victim 300 meters away but they could not save him.

In another incident Qiolevu says a man in his 60s from Navala, Ba is missing after he was swept away by strong currents as he was trying to cross the Yaloku Bridge.

Police will continue the search today.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed that a total of 192 people have been evacuated in 5 evacuation centers in the Western Division.

 

Nine evacuees are currently at Penang Sangam School, 52 people in Natabua Primary School, 108 in Lovu Sangam School, 8 in Lautoka Primary School while 15 people are at St. Teresa’s Primary School.

In Lautoka, Saru Bridge, Lovu Seaside, Tomuka and Reliance Road are affected by flood waters and police have confirmed that these areas are only open to heavy goods vehicles.

About five houses in Yalalevu, Ba are currently affected by flood waters.

A resident of Yalalevu has confirmed to Fijivillage that they are currently experiencing occasional showers and Yalalevu Road is flooded.

In Rakiraki, rain has stopped and flood waters are slowly receding in Naqoro flats, while areas such as Qalau Road, Mead Road Bridge, Drana Bridge, Narara Bridge and Naseyani Bridge are still affected by flood waters.

The Rakiraki market side has been cleared and flood waters at the Rakiraki Bus Stand are slowly receding.

Police have also evacuated people from Naviago, Natabua Seaside and Navutu Subdivision in Lautoka.Meanwhile, occasional rain have been experienced in Labasa but there has been no reports of flooding at the moment.
