A German performance group has become the first circus in the world to use holograms in the place of live animals.

Circus Roncalli started phasing out the use of performing animals in the nineties and has now taken the steps to cull them all together, in favour of projections.

Founded in 1976, the group dropped live animals for horses for an immersive light show of elephants, horses and even a goldfish.

The decision has been widely praised online, with hundreds of social media users complimenting the German group.
