It was a moment of pride, emotion and inspiration as two young athletes, Miriama Fositina and Caroline Sanday, represented Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School in the 800 metres sub junior final at the Suva Zone 1 athletics competition.
At just 13 years old, both girls did not only impress on the track but also touched the hearts of people with their humility and gratitude.
Fositina ran a strong race, finishing with a time of 2 minutes 38.20 seconds, while Sanday secured second place with 2 minutes 38.60 seconds after a thrilling finish.
Speaking to fijivillage News, the athletes say that without God, they would not have received the breath of life to compete today.
They say their journey to the zone was not easy.
They admitted that preparation had its challenges, especially progressing through earlier stages.
They say getting through the zone was not easy, and each level got harder and harder.
Despite the pressure, both girls remained focused, drawing strength from those closest to them.
Meanwhile, Amelia Singh of International School Suva came third, running a time of 2 minutes 39.91 seconds.
