He was best known for helping Nottingham Forest win two European Cup titles and scored the winning goal in the 1980 final against Hamburg and set up the goal in the 1979 final against Malmo.

Robertson played 28 times for Scotland, scoring a famous goal against England in 1981 and another at the 1982 World Cup against New Zealand.

After retiring, he worked as assistant coach with Martin O'Neill at clubs like Celtic and Aston Villa.
