Former Fiji 7s Captain and Coach Alifereti Dere has sadly passed away after a prolonged illness.
Dere was part of the winning 7s team in the 1990s alongside players like Waisele Serevi, Tomasi Cama Senior, Mesake Rasari, Pauliasi Tabulutu and Noa Nadruku.
The team was coached by the late Ratu Kitione Vesikula.
The entire rugby fraternity is mourning the loss of a great leader and sportsman.
Dere coached the winning 7s team to Hong Kong in 2013.
He also switched code and played rugby league.
The Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) says Dere played a foundational role in the establishment and growth of the organisation.
They say his vision to create overseas pathways for Fijian players and provide opportunities for future generations significantly shaped the direction of the sport in Fiji.
FNRL says his legacy will continue to inspire players, administrators, and the entire rugby league vuvale for years to come.
The organization has extended its sincere condolences to the Dere family during this difficult time.
As a mark of respect and in honour of his invaluable contribution to the sport, all FNRL development programmes and activities will be suspended until after his final burial.
