Diabetes Fiji has received a major boost after FNPF-owned IHG Fiji Hotels & Resorts donated $11,000 to support the people and programmes behind its community health screenings, diabetes education, and ongoing assistance for people living with, or at risk of, diabetes in Fiji.
Led by InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, with the support of Grand Pacific Hotel Suva and Holiday Inn Suva, the donation was raised through coffee sales held across the three hotels every Friday throughout June. It marks the hotels' first fundraising initiative in support of Diabetes Fiji.
IHG Hotels & Resorts says the initiative reflects its commitment to caring for people, extending from the health and well-being of hotel colleagues to the communities in which its hotels operate.
It says that, as 100 percent FNPF-owned properties, the hotels have a strong connection to the people of Fiji, and the partnership with Diabetes Fiji reflects a shared commitment to supporting long-term wellbeing and improving access to preventative health services.
The hotel group says the contribution will help Diabetes Fiji sustain the people and programmes behind its community services, including its Primary Health Screening Programme, volunteer engagement, and support for young people living with diabetes.
It adds that the donation will also assist the organisation in continuing its work with vulnerable communities and people who may have limited access to preventative health services.
IHG says diabetes remains a significant public health concern in Fiji, and early detection, regular monitoring, and access to reliable health information can help reduce the risk of serious complications.
The hotel group says Diabetes Fiji's work extends beyond screening to include health education, lifestyle guidance, referrals, follow-up support, and long-term disease management.
Alongside the donation, Diabetes Fiji conducted a three-day wellness screening programme at InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa from 20th to 22nd July, giving hotel colleagues convenient access to a broad range of preventative health and wellbeing services.
Screenings and consultations included blood sugar and blood pressure checks, weight, height and body mass index assessments, nutrition guidance, mental health support, physiotherapy, foot care, dental screening, eye and hearing assessments, and education on key health risk factors.
Regional General Manager, Fiji and Pacific, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Lachlan Walker, says hospitality is ultimately about people, and their colleagues create the experiences guests remember, making their health and wellbeing fundamental to the way the company operates.
Walker says the partnership gives colleagues convenient access to health checks and trusted information while also helping Diabetes Fiji extend essential services into communities across Fiji.
He adds that, as FNPF-owned hotels, they have a strong connection to the people of Fiji and are proud to contribute in a way that supports healthier colleagues, stronger communities, and a more sustainable future for the industry.
Executive Director of Diabetes Fiji, Kini Marawa, says the contribution is an investment in the people and programmes that deliver diabetes prevention, screening, and ongoing support across Fiji.
Marawa says sustaining the staff and volunteers who deliver these services in workplaces and communities is essential to the organisation's work.
He says support from the FNPF-owned IHG Fiji Hotels will help Diabetes Fiji continue providing early detection, health education, follow-up guidance, and practical assistance to people living with diabetes and those at risk.
Marawa also acknowledged the hotels, their colleagues, and guests for supporting the initiative.
