Batiki District Representative Tevita Tavodi says the school’s main water source has dried up, leaving it dependent on limited rainwater storage.
He says boarding students from two villages returned to school yesterday after spending some time at home because of the water shortage.
Tavodi says water use at the school is now being closely monitored as students continue with half-day classes.
Tavodi says the community believes the old dam has been there for more than 20 years and is relieved to have found water there.
However, he says the pipes connecting the dam to the school are old and will need to be replaced and repaired before the water source can be properly used.
Tavodi says the community has raised their water concerns during the Bose Ni Yasana for the past six years, but the issue remains unresolved.
Questions have been sent to the Ministry of National Disaster Management regarding possible assistance for Batiki. fijivillage News is awaiting a response.
