Qila residents face 2km journey for water as creek levels remain low
Residents of Qila in Taveuni may have to travel about two kilometres downhill to find an alternative water source, if prolonged dry weather causes their main supply to fall further.

Qila resident and Water Committee Secretary Jitendra Naidu says recent rain has improved the situation, with the community’s reservoir now about half full and supplying residents.

However, he says the creek that feeds the community’s water system remains low, and they will continue to closely monitor it.

Naidu says Qila is located high in the mountains and residents rely mainly on their community water system, which channels water from a creek into a catchment and reservoir.

He says if the main water source drops too low, residents may have to travel about two kilometres downhill to access another source.

Naidu says farmers are also feeling the effects of the dry weather, with some using 200-litre drums to collect whatever water they can from nearby creeks.

He says the community has not received water assistance during previous shortages, with residents largely relying on water sources available around them.

Naidu says he will continue checking the main water source as the community hopes for more rain.

Questions have been sent to the Ministry of Disaster Management regarding possible assistance for the community, however, there has been no response so far.

fijivillage News is continuing to seek a response.
