A leg injury suffered during training did not deter 18-year-old Asenaca Kuinikoro of Lautoka Andhra Sangam College from claiming gold in the senior girls’ 1500 metres of the Coca Cola Lautoka Zone competition that is currently underway at Churchill Park.

The Lomaiviti student shared that she lost all hope after injuring her leg while training for the long jump competition prior to the school’s interhouse this year, but her coach kept encouraging her to keep pushing hard and believed in her that she could make a strong comeback.

Kuinikoro says that was one of the big challenges she faced and she managed to overcome it successfully.

When asked by fijivillage Sports how she felt coming into the 1500 metres event this morning, Kuinikoro says she lost a bit of hope when she heard she will be up against athletes from Jasper Williams High School, but her coach kept encouraging her to focus on her performance and believe in herself.

No updates on the medal tally have been released but Natabua High School and Yasawa High School have been dominating the tracks so far.
