After a 26 year title drought at their home ground, Labasa has been crowned champions of the 2025 Extra Battle of the Giants Tournament after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Rewa in the final at Subrail Park.

Head Coach Alvin Chand says lifting the trophy is a moment of “pure pleasure and relief” — one that words can’t fully capture.

Speaking to fijivillage News after his side’s thrilling win, Chand says the most satisfying part of the victory was seeing the Labasa fans finally getting a chance to celebrate.

He says that during the halftime break, with the score locked at 1-1, he advised his players to stay disciplined and fight with heart — not just for the team, but for their supporters who have stood by them all the way.

Chand described the triumph as a proud moment in his coaching journey, crediting the players’ commitment and mindset throughout the tournament.

He says the boys came in with a winning mentality — and they kept that spirit alive in every match - that’s what made the difference today.

The Babasiga Lions struck first through Rusiate Doidoi in the 17th minute, sending the home crowd into celebration.

Rewa responded in the 33rd minute with Josaia Sela equalising, bringing the halftime score to 1-1.

But it was Labasa who had the final say, with Simione Ragoneturaga scoring the decisive goal in the second half to secure the title.

The match had to be stopped for a few minutes in the first half as some fans and reserve players were arguing with each other.

It was also stopped briefly in the second half for the same reason as earlier, but police and Fiji Football Association officials quickly brought the situation under control.

With the title now back in Labasa’s hands, Chand says the team’s focus and unity is stronger than ever.
