All Blacks coach Ian Foster says he was “pretty surprised” by Jordie Barrett’s red card in Sunday’s Rugby Championship test against the Wallabies.

Barrett became the sixth All Black to be sent off in a test match, when he was red-carded in the 27th minute of the first half in a test the All Blacks eventually won 38-21, running in six tries to three.

With the match being played under experimental laws being trialled by World Rugby, Barrett was able to be replaced after 20 minutes by the All Blacks, with Foster bringing Damian McKenzie in at fullback seven minutes into the second spell to restore the side to its full complement.

Barrett could be suspended for close to the rest of the Rugby Championship if the All Blacks are unable to prove that the incident should not have met with a red card.
