Training without access to a 50-metre pool in the Western Division did not stop Drasa Avenue School from retaining the girls' division title at the National Schools Age Group Swimming Championships.
Drasa Avenue coach and Fiji National Primary Schools Swimming Association president Salaseni Lele says the team had to adapt its preparation significantly ahead of the long-course competition, with swimmers building endurance and refining technique despite limited facilities.
Lele says most of the squad were development swimmers who were prepared within a short period of just one to two months, making the title defence even more satisfying.
She says despite the challenges, the Drasa girls delivered strong performances across all age groups, including setting a national record in the 11–12 years 4x50m medley relay.
She adds that the lack of a 50-metre pool in the West remains a major hurdle in preparation, but the swimmers showed resilience and determination to defend their title.
Lele praised the support of assistant coaches, parents and the school community in Lautoka, saying their contribution was vital in ensuring the team was ready to compete at a high level.
She says the girls held off strong competition from other schools with longer preparation periods and better facilities, proving their consistency once again on the national stage.
Looking ahead, Lele says the focus now shifts to upcoming championships, with continued athlete development and pathways into club swimming.
