Spain are shaping up to be one of the biggest threats to the Fiji Airways Men’s National 7s side as they continue their push for a first-ever HSBC SVNS tournament title ahead of the World Championship tournament in Valladolid, Spain.
Spain have been one of the form teams on the circuit and recently claimed bronze in Hong Kong after beating rugby powerhouses New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.
The side coached by former player Francisco "Paco" Hernandez has continued its impressive rise this season, also winning silver in Vancouver.
Hernandez says success in 7s can sometimes come unexpectedly and believes setbacks have helped shape the Spanish side into a stronger team.
He says Spain’s programme has gone through major changes in recent years, including moving players to Malaga and expanding their coaching and support structure.
The coach says they have also built a stronger professional culture, with players expected to commit fully on and off the field.
Spain narrowly missed out on qualifying for the Paris Olympics but bounced back strongly, recording their best-ever finish on the HSBC SVNS Series standings after finishing third overall last season.
The growth of community rugby and development at youth level has also strengthened their player base, while Spain have become known for their ability to control possession and apply strong defensive pressure.
Despite their recent success, Spain are still chasing their first HSBC SVNS tournament title and will be hoping home support in Valladolid can help them create history.
Valladolid 7s will be played in Spain from this Friday to Sunday
Spain are pooled with Fiji, France and the USA in the World Championship tournament.
Meanwhile, Fiji will begin its Valladolid 7s campaign against France on Friday at 11.40pm before facing the USA at 4.24am on Saturday.
They will then take on hosts Spain at 12.12am on Sunaday in their final pool match.
