NZ soccer captain named world player of the week

New Zealand captain Ryan Nelsen has been named world player of the week by an international football website, for his outstanding performances in South Africa.

Chosen by goal.com's editorial team, the award goes to the player deserving recognition for achieving something special.

Nelsen was voted the winner on the opening week of the 2010 World Cup for ''inspiring his side to two draws against Slovakia and world champions Italy.

New Zealand who are in Group F has a very interesting scenario where Paraguay is leading with 4 points and they will meet on Friday.

The All Whites will need to beat Paraguay to reach the second round and a draw could favor defending champion Italy, who will be taking on Slovakia.

Only four teams have so far confirmed their spot in the second round of competition, where the Pool winners and runners up from the 8 pools will progress into the second stage of the competition.

The four teams are Argentina, Brazil, Netherlands and Chile.

Results from last night's games, Portugal thumped North Korea 7-nil, Chile beat Switzerland 1-nil and Spain defeated Honduras 2-nil.

Looking at the upcoming games at 2am tomorrow morning, there will be two matches where Mexico plays Uruguay and France takes on hosts South Africa.
