Police are continuing their investigation into the death of a man who died after allegedly being chased by a pack of dogs while carrying out his duties with the Suva City Council.
The pack of dogs chased him, resulting in him attempting to grab onto a moving SCC garbage truck but allegedly slipping and falling before being run over by the vehicle.
Police confirmed to fijivillage News this morning that the investigation remains ongoing.
Several days after the incident, stray dogs continue to roam the streets of Suva, with fijivillage News observing dogs wandering through busy intersections and resting outside the Suva Courthouse.
The Ministry of Agriculture's Animal Health and Production team says it has intensified efforts to reduce the stray dog population in Suva, nearby areas, and other parts of the country.
Acting Director of Animal Health and Production for the Operations Department, Avinesh Dayal Dass, says the Ministry is working in partnership with the Suva City Council on an ongoing dog-trapping exercise.
Dass said $300,000 has been allocated for the programme, which includes trapping and immunising stray dogs.
He added that additional funding is expected in the new financial year beginning in August, enabling the department to expand the stray dog control programme on a larger scale.
The department is also working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Suva City Council, and non-governmental organisations to strengthen the ongoing campaign.
