A woman residing in Suva is questioning why she has been denied access to CCTV footage after her vehicle was allegedly damaged in a hit-and-run involving two police vehicles during peak traffic hours in the Capital City.
44-year-old Sylvia Kissun says the incident occurred on Wednesday between 1pm and 2pm while she was stationary at a red traffic light near the Reserve Bank of Fiji.
Kissun alleges that a white police van, registration number GT813, struck her vehicle and failed to stop.
She says another police vehicle was reportedly travelling directly behind the van at the time.
She says both police vehicles were caught in heavy traffic when the van began sounding its horn repeatedly, despite the traffic lights remaining red.
She adds that a vehicle travelling from Suva Central panicked and stopped partially at the RBF entrance, leaving a narrow passage between her car and other vehicles.
She says the police van forced its way through the narrow gap and rubbed against her vehicle, causing her driver’s side mirror to come off and leaving dents on the fender.
She says the estimated cost of damage is around $500 to $600.
Kissun says she followed all required reporting procedures and has been informed that the police officer driving the vehicle has since been charged, but she cannot obtain the CCTV footage from Totogo Police Station.
She says she was advised by the officer that the CCTV footage is only for police evidence.
We have sent questions to Police. They are yet to respond.
