The University of Fiji has achieved another milestone following the soft launch of the new Suva Central Expansion of the Samabula Campus, Art Gallery, and Enlightenment Book Shop at the De Vos building in Suva.
The new campus will cater to students who are in their final years of study under MBBS, journalism studies, and arts and music.
Vice Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem says they expanded their Samabula Campus because of the large number of students they have.
She says during their last Council meeting, it was raised by the University’s nursing coordinator that they cannot take in any more students as there is no space to teach them.
Professor Shameem says they could not turn away students because they needed the revenue, and sometimes they had to use the students’ bure as a classroom to teach students.
She adds that the Permanent Secretary for Education told them not to put a cap on their number of students, which has stuck with them.
The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted that they will be opening a new campus in Labasa, and they have signed a lease agreement with Galaxy Building
.
Professor Shameem says this will go through the process and will seek the permission of the Higher Education Commission.
She says with this new campus and space, they can take in more students.
